We are seeking a Packaging Design Engineer with entrepreneurial ambitions and strong academic record to back them up. We make premium products for child development and play, and we need a rock star to help our team commercialize more than 70 products per year. The job responsibilities include the design and technical development of packaging for a variety of products, from conceptual stages through validation testing and manufacturing. Job Description

  • Collaborate with Design Engineering to develop beautiful, reliable, economical, and sustainable packaging solutions for children's toys and products that promote early stage development
  • Coordinate with Operations and Product Development teams early and often to ensure economical and cost-effective packaging configurations, palletization, and container loading
  • Evaluate new and existing product designs to improve packaging aesthetics and performance
  • Own the end-to-end packaging solution process that can safely and successfully transport finished products from the factory floor to the end customer’s point of delivery
  • Create packaging designs relative to strict safety, regulatory and performance requirements
  • Create packaging specifications using CAD software and manage file storage systems to maintain version control
  • Coordinate with Operations, Regulatory and Graphic Design departments to implement regulatory labelling and facilitate precise product traceability
  • Collaborate with Graphic Design team to develop both direct-to-consumer and retail packaging
  • Prepare technical packaging drawings and documentation for manufacturing
  • Work directly with overseas and domestic suppliers to evaluate packaging designs and optimize for manufacturing (travel expected)
  • Evaluate manufacturing quotations and negotiate packaging costs to achieve strict BOM targets
  • Provide direct input to product profitability assessments to assist in determining fully burdened costs associated with freight and fulfillment

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years experience in Packaging Design, Engineering, or related field
  • 500+ hours CAD experience in 2D/2.5D/3D packaging design software
  • Experience with environmentally sustainable packaging materials including cardboard, paperboard, molded paper pulp, recyclable plastics, and other compostable materials
  • Photo-realistic rendering capabilities to communicate ideas to a non-technical audience
  • Excellent aesthetic skills with strong ability to visualize packaging arrangements in 3D
  • Proven ability to build physical packaging prototypes at various development levels, ranging from proof of concept to photo-quality samples
  • Advanced knowledge of packaging manufacturing methods, including die cutting, laser cutting, and molding
  • Strong understanding of packaging standards, including ISO, ASTM, FedEx, Amazon, etc
  • Proven application of drafting standards and technical specifications
  • Exceptional technical writing and verbal communication skills
  • Proven leadership and teamwork skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work experience or extracurricular activities related to Packaging Design discipline
  • Experience with children & child development
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Experience with Solidworks 3D CAD software
  • DFMEA & Root Cause Analysis
  • Experience with rapid prototyping and 3D manufacturing
